Important Road Signs - Part 2
9 End of the play street
When children play, they forget the world around them. When they play on a play street, it is important that they know exactly where the street ends. The end of the play street is also marked by a sign. Beyond it, the normal traffic rules apply again. On this sign, the "play street" symbol is crossed out by a thick red bar. This means the play area ends here. You must not play in the street beyond this sign!
10 One-way street
Some streets are very narrow and confined. They can then only be used in one direction. These streets are called one-way streets. A white arrow on a blue sign shows which way to go. The sign above therefore indicates that the one-way street continues straight ahead.
11 No Entry
Eventually, every one-way street comes to an end. To stop anyone from turning the wrong way into a one-way street, signs are put up here again, often one on each side of the road. They are round and red, with a wide horizontal white bar in the middle. They mean: No entry! You must not go any further, even on a bicycle.
12 No cycling or walking! Except for one exception!
A new sports hall is being built here. Because a crane is needed and it has to stand right in the street, the road has been closed. You can see three signs here. The top one shows a bicycle inside a red circle. You must not ride any further if you’re on your bicycle. Below it, you can see a pedestrian, also inside a red circle. This means pedestrians are not allowed to go any further either. The third sign indicates an exception: residents may drive or walk through, but only as far as their house or apartment.
13 No pedestrians
Stop! Do not go any further! It would be dangerous because construction work is taking place here. Pedestrians must use the other side of the street. But take care when crossing the road!
14 Caution! Cyclists!
Watch out, Dad! Watch out, Mum! Cyclists may cross the road here. The two arrows underneath show that they may come from either the left or the right. A cycle path crosses here just before the main road.
15 Stop! Halt!
Everyone understands this sign. It means you must stop here, whether you are driving a car or riding a bicycle. The sign is placed before busy roads. You must be very careful here. First stop, then check whether the road is clear, and only then may you continue. The word "Stop" on the sign uses the old spelling. It should actually have a P.
16 Stop! Give way!
When you see this sign, you should stop. It means you must let other vehicles go first. In other words, vehicles on the main road have the right of way. Traffic from the side road must wait. Children, by the way, must always stop before crossing a road, no matter what—even if there’s no sign like this in sight.
17 No Overtaking!
You should know this road sign so you can help keep Mom and Dad safe. Here, it is forbidden to overtake other cars or trucks. You may only pass slow-moving farm vehicles. The white line in the middle of the road is usually solid, too.
