Look at the two collages. Try to give a short talk about grain harvesting in the past and today.

Practical additions:

• Examine grains: View them with magnifying glasses, compare, sort and label them.
• Drawing plants: Take a close look at an ear or panicle and mark its distinctive features.
• Observe germination: sow some seeds and keep a journal for several weeks, adding the date, drawings and short sentences.
• Grinding grain: Use a suitable hand mill to grind grain, then compare whole grains, cracked grain and flour.
• Sorting food: Collect packaging and use the ingredient lists to identify the types of grain it contains.
• Putting together an exhibition: Present drawings, grain samples, question cards and selected fair copies.
