- Düsseldorf Airport is the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia and the third largest in Germany. Only Frankfurt and Munich have more take-offs and landings. In 2023, Düsseldorf handled more than 19 million passengers. It also transported more than 29,000 tonnes of air freight. A total of 74 airlines flew to 174 destinations from here. Düsseldorf Airport employed 22,200 people.
- Düsseldorf Airport is north of the city, just a few kilometres from the city centre. North Rhine-Westphalia also has the airports of Cologne-Bonn, Münster-Osnabrück, Dortmund and Paderborn. 3 - The airport has two runways. Both are 45 metres wide; one is 2,700 metres long and the other is 3,000 metres long. Air traffic is monitored from the control tower. At 87 metres tall, this tower is the highest in Germany.
- You can get to the airport by car or train. In Düsseldorf, a special connection between the railway station and the airport has been set up: the Sky Train, which takes passengers to the terminals automatically and without a driver.
- Most people book a flight online or through a travel agency well before departure. Before passengers are allowed to board a plane, they have to check in at one of the large departure halls, called terminals. Düsseldorf has Terminals A, B and C.
- Checking in means registering at the airport. There are desks for this, though you can often check in online too. Large bags must be checked in at the desk; you can take only a small piece of hand luggage onto the plane. Before reaching the gate, you have to go through a security check.
- Your hand luggage is screened, and everything you are carrying is checked. You must not take any dangerous objects onto the plane. Before boarding, you can do some shopping or get something to eat or drink. You can also watch the planes taking off and landing. Then it’s time to say: Have a good flight!
