Berlin’s town hall is known as the “Red Town Hall.” The Governing Mayor has worked here since 1992. Because the mayor is not only the head of the city but also the most senior politician in the state of Berlin, the title is preceded by the word “Governing.” The mayor heads the city administration and the Berlin Senate. The Senate consists of the Governing Mayor and the ministers of the state of Berlin. Berlin’s town hall is called the “Red Town Hall” because it was built of red brick. Construction was completed in 1870. One of its distinctive landmarks is its 74-meter tower. During the era of the German Democratic Republic, the town hall was the seat of the mayor of East Berlin. West Berlin was governed from Schöneberg Town Hall.
