Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s largest airport. In 2023, more than 59 million passengers travelled through the airport, and almost 2 million tonnes of air freight were transported. Almost 81,000 people work here.

Frankfurt Airport is the oldest airport in Germany, having opened in 1936. It is located in the southwest of Frankfurt, about 12 km from the city centre. The “Frankfurter Kreuz” motorway interchange is right nearby, connecting the airport to two motorways running north–south and east–west.

The airport also has two railway stations: one for regional trains and one for long-distance trains. More than 400 trains a day bring passengers here or pick them up. Of course, you can also take a taxi or drive to the airport in your own car and leave it in a car park. Frankfurt Airport is served by more than 100 airlines. Many passengers use the airport as a connecting hub and fly on to other destinations from here.

Frankfurt is the home airport of Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa. The airport is operated by Fraport AG. It has a total of four runways. There are currently two large passenger terminals with a total of five concourses. A fully automated baggage handling system can transport more than 20,000 pieces of luggage per hour. The system’s conveyor belts are 80 km long in total.

A third terminal is under construction. It is due to be completed in 2026 and is expected to handle 19 million passengers. The SkyLine, a fully automated elevated railway, runs between the terminals. There are two cargo terminals for handling air freight. Many people live near the airport. To ensure they can sleep peacefully at night, a night flight ban is in effect in Frankfurt. No aircraft may take off or land between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
