The airport is about 28 kilometers northeast of the city of Munich, in an area known as the Erdinger Moos. It opened in 1992, replacing the old Munich-Riem Airport, which had become too small. Before construction work could begin, several hundred people had to be relocated. The airport is named after former Bavarian Minister-President Franz-Josef Strauß. The airport currently has two runways. Each is 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide. They can be operated independently of each other. Air traffic is monitored from the control tower. It is 87 meters tall and is currently the tallest in Germany.
Every day, Munich Airport served as many people as live in a large city: in 2023, 37 million passengers departed from or arrived here. In addition, 284,000 tonnes of air freight and airmail were transported.
In Germany, Munich Airport ranked second after Frankfurt/Main. There were 302,000 take-offs and landings. 99 airlines connected Munich Airport with 219 other airports in 64 countries. The airport is about 45 minutes from Munich city centre. You can get there by S-Bahn, taxi or your own car, which you can leave in one of the airport car parks. Before passengers can board a plane, they must check in at one of the large departure halls, called terminals. Munich has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Large items of luggage must be checked in. They are packed into containers and carried in the aircraft's hold.
You are only allowed to take a small item of hand luggage on board. Before departure, you have to undergo a strict security check. This is because no one may bring dangerous objects on board that could endanger other passengers or crew members.
The airport is owned by the Free State of Bavaria, the Federal Republic of Germany and the city of Munich. A visitor park has been created for people visiting the airport. From a hill, you can watch planes take off and land. A number of older aircraft are on display nearby.
